Here are some tips for making my Extra Chocolatey Chocolate Sheet Cake:

  • This sour cream in this recipe in there solely to keep this cake moist for even longer. If you do not have sour cream, feel free to leave it out of the recipe without compromising taste at all.
  • This recipe can also be used to make cupcakes. To do this, simply fill lined or greased cupcake tins 3/4 full with the batter and then pour the icing on top of the cooled cupcakes.
  • DO NOT overbake this cake! One of the best things about sheet cake is how moist the cake stays because of the warm icing the it is drenched in. Overbaking a cake is one of the best ways to dry it out, and you definitely do not want to do that!
  • This cake will stay fresh and delicious when kept at room temperature for up to a week.

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup water boiling
  • 5 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup sour cream


  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup chocolate chips semi sweet
  • 5 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 lb confectioners sugar


For the cake

  • Preheat the oven to 350° and grease a sheet cake pan.
  • In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking soda. Set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, boiling water and cocoa powder until the cocoa powder is well dissolved. Allow to cool for a minute or two.
  • Add the buttermilk, vanilla, eggs and sour cream to the cocoa powder mixture and mix until well combined. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix just until combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and bake for 18-20 minutes.

For the icing

  • While the cake is in the oven, prepare the icing. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Add the chocolate chips, cocoa powder, milk and vanilla and whisk together until melted and well combined. Slowly whisk in the confectioners sugar until well combined.
  • When the cake is done, remove it from the oven and pour the icing on top. Gently spread the icing only if needed. Allow to cool before serving.
